Mary Adrian opened Beadifferent in 2000 in the Santa Fe Village at 227 Don Gaspar. The store is a block and 1/2 off the famous Plaza. Mary has been designing jewelry since 1988, as a hobby. "I was living in Florida at the time and thought it would be fun to string some beads together. I liked the results, and would find myself, still up creating until 2:00 or 3:00 in the morning, wondering where the time went. In a few months I had a lot of jewelry and decided to sell some to support my new interest. I was pretty thrilled when the buyer started separating the jewelry into two piles. I made my first sale and after that sold to boutiques, women's clothing stores, and museum shops."
Beadifferent is a beaded jewelry store, (with some beads for sale.) One of a kind pieces using semiprecious, antique, vintage, pearls, crystal, charms, amulets and found pieces. "I want some of the jewelry to look organic or ancient, however most of the jewelry is quite simple. I can lengthen, shorten, or modify the made jewelry usually within an hour. I want people to be able to enjoy something beautiful, made with love using excellent materials, a piece that can actually be worn for a lifetime.
	I love it when someone walks in with an object of meaning to them and shyly asks if I can make a necklace for it. This is what I do! Shortly the ice is broken and the creative process begins. This is a laid back place and we have a good time. We usually start by looking at the made jewelry and in a few minutes find a general direction. "well I like this, but the lapis doesn't work, could we turquoise instead?"
I make a few suggestions and we are on our way. Most of the time the customer can pick up there jewelry later the same day. If I have to collect material it could take a week or more. Often I ship the finished piece, because they have been on vacation and have gone home. Some customers send me photos of jewelry for me to make for them. I'm very inspired by other designers. I have custom designed for brides, prom gores, a many attending local Santa Fe events. Most pieces are under $100.00, custom designs are usually more. A simple pair of earring start a $18.
	Restringing and pearl knotting are also available. Turquoise has been very hot this year. Lariat necklaces (long open ended strands to be worn in several ways) sell very well, also soft leather collars with a large pendant or black cross do very well. The main thing I want to convey to my customer is, they have a part in the design process. I have been given so many great ideas from them. I hear many times as people are leaving "this was fun".
